Balloon Magic

The first January weekend of 2009 left Faneuil Hall less than crowded. Mostly families with small children filled the tourist attraction yesterday in the apparent hope to make the best of the last vacation day. During these cold winter times, however, the children are antsy for entertainment by the time they come to the middle of the oblong building, and luckily, Malik the Magic Guy awaits to save the day.

Malik Haddadi stands dutifully next to a white cup with “Thank You” written on it overflowing with balloon recreations of Elmo, Daffy Duck, a flower and a dog. As children pass they look mesmerized at the figures on display and plead with varying success to on looking parents. For those that are successful, Malik moves his hands quickly with purpose, occasionally throwing in entertainment for the kids by pulling balloons from behind their ear.

“Business is down” Malik said about the magic and balloon business, “people aren’t looking for entertainers like me too much anymore.” Coinciding with his statement, the parents made skeptical looks as he handed them his card and suggested that he call them for any parties. “I work here for tips when I can” he said, “I could use the extra cash.”

Whether or not there is room for Malik the Magic Guy in the everyday household budget, he is one of the few fires left in the freezing Faneuil Hall this winter. Hopefully the magic that Malik provides with his simple balloon Elmos doesn’t disappear during these desperate times.
